city, Fukuoka ken (prefecture), Kyushu, Japan, on the upper Onga River. The city developed as a mining centre with the opening of the Chikuhō Coalfield and a railway from Wakamatsu in the 1890s. The mines were gradually closed after World War II, and Iizuka is now a commercial centre and railway hub. Pop. (2005) 133,357.
